Birders,
A major earthquake hit the ornithological world today when it was announced that the American Ornithological Society will be changing common names of North American birds named after people in 2024 !! That includes nearly 80 bird species in NA and 22 species (plus hybrids) here in Mason County. Our county list includes the following species:
Ross's Goose, Baird's Sandpiper, Wilson's Snipe, Wilson's Phalarope, Sabine's Gull, Bonaparte's Gull, Franklin's Gull, Forster's Tern, Cooper's Hawk, Say's Phoebe, Townsend's Solitaire, Swainson's Thrush, Henslow's Sparrow, Le Conte's Sparrow, Nelson's Sparrow, Lincoln's Sparrow, Harris's Sparrow, Brewer's Blackbird, Brewster's Warbler (hybrid), Lawrence's Warbler (hybrid), Kirtland's Warbler, and Wilson's Warbler.
Check out this link.
I hope a similar earthquake develops to change the many birds named after locations having nothing to do with the species' breeding habitat or behavior.
Dave
